Bird’s Lament is a genre-blending short film that combines noir and western tropes with elements of Iranian culture. Shot in the summer of 2019 and completed in 2021, the film was never publicly released, but it marked a formative moment for MEX Films — both creatively and logistically.
Production proved unusually intense. Our original cinematographer dropped out at the last minute, leading to a hasty and difficult replacement. Post-production was severely delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, stretching what began as a short-term project into a long and educational process.
Though the film ultimately remained unreleased, it served as an internal milestone — a kind of baptism by fire. One key lesson we carried forward: cost-saving decisions, if made unwisely, often end up costing more.
